A few thoughts on AI and Photography/Photo Art

Over the past few years, I have experimented with various genres of photography, including landscapes, events, still life, and portraits. In 2023, I became interested in AI. As I started experimenting with a few tools, I was initially concerned that this might affect my photography skills, but I am excited about the possibilities of this unique challenge.

Cave dweller painting on cave wall

Art has come a long way since cave dwellers would express their thoughts and ideas through pictures drawn on walls. Over time, tools used to create Art have changed from traditional mediums such as paint and ink to new forms such as photography and digital graphics. These more unique forms of Art have emerged as contemporary works of Art.

Although AI can create entire images, I do not personally view that as actual photography or art. However, if I am using AI to add extra elements to a photograph, such as a new background or object in the frame, that is a form of photo art. I will use AI however to create advertising or social media content (such as this blog); this is not the same as claiming an image as my own work; it's simply a time-saving workaround for me to illustrate a point.

I am comfortable with using some AI-generated content in my work. However, I only use it to create separate parts, similar to using stock images. Then, I combine the AI-generated elements with my camera images in Photoshop to create a finished piece of art. By coming up with the initial concepts, making a series of artistic decisions, and utilizing my expertise in Photoshop, I can bring my creative vision to life.

Robot as an idea of AI tools when editing pictures

The market is flooded with numerous AI tools, which can be overwhelming due to their complexity. Companies such as Adobe Photoshop, Skylum Luminar AI, and Topaz Labs introduce new AI-powered photo editing software, apps, and features every month. The constantly evolving AI-powered solutions open up new avenues for creative expression.

These tools, such as image generators and artistic filters, have the potential to inspire experimentation and push the boundaries of what is achievable in the art of photo editing.

In general, the emergence of AI in the field of photography offers a lot of exciting possibilities and hurdles to overcome. AI is a powerful tool that can augment human creativity, and it should be embraced as such instead of being considered as a replacement.

As AI technology advances, we can expect even more sophisticated tools and groundbreaking applications to redefine photography. I fully expect a period of experimentation and adaptation until things settle down. Until that day, I will enjoy experimenting with any new tools that come along.
